Protecting Our Living World

At Takata, we see the global environment as the source of all life. Protecting the global environment is as important to Takata as saving human life. To this end, we are working to protect the environment and use natural resources as efficiently as possible.

To leave an abundant and healthy environment to future generations, all companies in the Takata Group have implemented initiatives to obtain ISO14001 certification for their environmental management systems and almost all have already qualified.

At Takata, we believe that giving careful attention to the natural environment in our R&D and other development activities is an important part of “quality” in the broadest sense. We take initiatives to develop products that do not harm the environment and work to reduce the burden our products place on the ecosystem. Also, by designing products that are lighter in weight and more compact, we contribute to enhancing the performance of automobiles and reducing fuel consumption. We are committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to positive coexistence between the car and the natural environment.

In addition to our environmental initiatives as a company, each of the business locations of the Takata Group conducts activities that help to reduce the burden our activities place on the natural environment. We have developed systems that reduce electric power consumption, the volume of wastes, the use of paper and plastic bags, and our goal is to cut waste emissions to zero. Furthermore we encourage our employees to participate in environmental preservation programs in their communities such as the distribution of tree seedlings for planting.

Takata not only wants to create a safer world, but also leave a beautiful natural environment for future generations. In other words, we are working to protect the life of the Earth itself.

Environmental Management System (ISO14001 Activities)

As a leading global automotive supplier, Takata Corporation is committed to the protection of the world’s environment and natural resources. As part of that commitment, the majority of our production facilities are ISO14001 certified. At all of our plants, we set measurable environmental targets for each production base area, including research and energy conservation, waste material reduction, recycling and more. We are proud of our efforts to continuously improve our environmental management processes, and currently involve all employees and management in ongoing environmental education and training initiatives.

Environmental Principles

The Takata Corporation is committed to taking active steps to protect the global environment, including a promise to do our part in today’s recycling-oriented world. Our environmental commitment is an active part of all of our corporate activities, designed to improve the well being of our customers, and society as a whole.

Environmental Policy

The Takata Corporation will implement the following ongoing activities as part of its environmental policy:

  1. Reduce the environmental load through ongoing improvement in business activities.
  2. Comply with all legal and other environmental requirements.
  3. Establish environmental objectives and goals, and achieve ongoing improvement through regular measurement and review processes.
  4. Encourage and enlist the active participation of all our employees in our activities to protect the global environment.
  5. Actively promote and increase awareness of our environmental policy both internally and externally.

Eco-Friendly Products

At Takata, when we talk about Quality, we also consider the impact of our products to the environment. The Research and Development groups take the initiative to ensure our end products are made without having a negative impact to our natural surroundings. We do this by carefully reviewing the materials and structure of each part. Aside from eliminating harmful materials, we also look to reduce the size and weight of each product as much as possible. The result of a lighter unit to the OEM is an improvement in vehicle performance by lowering fuel consumption and thereby, reducing gas emissions. Takata’s goal is to work with the OEM’s to continually improve the relationship between a vehicle and the environment.

Lead-Free Solder Initiatives

The use of lead in solder is controlled after 2011 by the ANNEX II of European’s ELV directive. Takata is already proceeding with lead-free solder in all products.

*ELV (End of Life Vehicle) is a European initiative to ban the use of dangerous materials (such as Lead, Mercury, Hexavalent Chromium and Cadmium) so when vehicles are at the end of their useful life, these materials do not have a harmful impact to the environment.

European REACH Initiatives

REACH is an EU (European) regulation regarding the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of certain CHemical materials. The objectives are to protect the health of people, maintain a high level of environmental protection, ensure unrestrained distribution of chemicals within the EU market and enhance the competiveness and innovation of the EU Chemical Industry.

If companies do not comply with REACH, they are not allowed to produce and distribute chemical items within the EU market.

This regulation also applies to products which are manufactured outside the European region and imported to the area.

When the REACH initiative became effective in 2007, Takata immediately started our internal REACH program. Takata Group companies have since been performing activities on a global basis to ensure our materials and products comply with this regulation.

Product Innovation

Takata has also been successful in reviewing existing parts and changing the structure to deliver more compact products to the OEM’s. This helps support their goals in making lighter, more efficient vehicles.

For example, both our knee airbag, which protects the passenger’s legs during a frontal collision, and our seat belt retractors have had their basic structures reviewed. We have been able to reduce the size and weight of each by optimizing the design. The airbag inflator was reconfigured and improved methods of weaving seatbelt webbing were key factors in our improvements.

By constantly making improvements in our designs, we continue to help support the relationship between our products, the vehicles they are used in and the environment.

Eco-Friendly Production / Distribution

Takata is actively working to reduce the volume of waste emitted from its production and distribution facilities.

In manufacturing, we have already taken steps to cut the volume of waste by reducing the number of defective parts in our production process. Also, we recycle as much as we can. Items that were formerly treated as waste are now broken down to the component level and separated into metals and plastics for recycling.

In distribution, we have reviewed our packaging methods and adopted recyclable materials as much as possible. Styrofoam, wrapping film, and other materials are handed over to specialized recycling companies for use in the production of other products, such as plastic bottles.

Plant Level Eco-Protection

Takata is working to eliminate the waste of resources as much as possible at all of its business locations. We have formed an Environmental Promotion Committee with the goal of reducing waste emissions to zero. Items, such as reducing electrical power consumption and eliminating the use of paper and plastic bags where possible, help assist in this goal.

Each of our manufacturing plants has also set specific goals for lowering effluent emissions, noise, and other causes of environmental impairment. The level of attainment of these goals is consistently monitored. We are also active in the communities where we live. Our staff members participate in environmental preservation activities, such as the distribution of tree seedlings for planting.

Contributing to Community & Society

Since Takata’s founding, our dream has been “the day when the number of victims of traffic accidents is reduced to zero.” Takata is actively involved in many kinds of activities that contribute to the community and society to help achieve this goal.

"Our mission - your safety." is more than just a slogan. We work to improve the quality of life through many initiatives and endeavors to be a good corporate citizen. Takata is involved in the community in many different ways.

Participating in Traffic Safety Events

Takata participates in traffic safety events conducted by government offices and other groups. We work to communicate the importance of fastening seat belts by displaying our Seat Belt Convincer, a piece of equipment that simulates automobile collisions. It allows event participants to experience the proper use of seat belts. We also conduct other activities with obstetricians, pediatricians and expecting mothers to communicate the importance and significance of using child-restraint seats. Our goal for these events is to increase the percentage of persons using seat belts and child safety seats.

Implementing Driver Education Programs for Young People

Takata has developed its own training program for less-experienced drivers, such as teenagers. "Takata Safe Driver" aims to prevent the tragedies of traffic accidents, and is designed and taught by Takata personnel. The program, which makes use of a driving simulator, has attracted favorable attention. It has received an award from the State of Michigan in the United States and has been adopted for a program conducted by the Detroit Science Center, which is located in downtown Detroit, Michigan.

Supporting Activities of Mothers Against Drunk Driving(MADD*)

Takata has partnered with MADD for many years and has supported its activities for stopping, to the greatest extent possible, drunk driving and the life-threatening dangers it presents.

ボタン* MADD´s goal is to completely eliminate drunk driving. It was founded in 1980 by a group of mothers following a hit-and-run accident in California that resulted in the death of a minor and was caused by a habitually drunk driver. Members of MADD wanted to convince the government to take action against drunk driving, which, at that time, was largely ignored. MADD has since become the largest NPO (Non-Profit Organization) in the world for crime victims, with 600 chapters in the United States and more than two million members.

Assistance to the Children´s Hospital of Philadelphia(CHOP)

CHOP is one of the top pediatric hospitals in the United States and Takata has supported its activities to develop effective treatments for children who suffer from brain-trauma and other injuries from traffic accidents. We have also worked jointly with CHOP to develop a child dummy abdominal damage assessment tool by utilizing the adult dummy abdominal damage assessment tool developed by the Ford Motor Company. This was done jointly with the Automobile Safety Research Institute at the University of Virginia and other groups with high-level technology in this area.

Looking ahead, we will continue to support the activities of CHOP, until our dream of reducing the number of victims of traffic accidents to zero comes true.
